First

First (2,168 m) is the main summer mountain destination above Grindelwald, reached by an 30-minute gondola from the village. The plateau gives access to a network of hiking trails including the classic First to Schynige Platte traverse — a five- to six-hour ridge walk with uninterrupted views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.

The area has been developed into an adventure zone with the First Flyer zip line, the First Glider paragliding launch, a cliff walk, and mountain carts for the descent. The Bachalpsee, a high lake reflecting the Schreckhorn and Finsteraarhorn, is a 45-minute walk from the top station and one of the most photographed views in Switzerland. Even without any activities, the gondola ride up and the views across the valley make First worth the trip.

A story
The First Flyer zip line at First drops 800 metres in altitude over 4 kilometres at up to 84 km/h, making it one of the longest mountain zip lines in the Alps. It opened in 2018 as part of Grindelwald's transformation of the First plateau into a year-round adventure zone.
