Grindelwald sits directly beneath the Eiger's north face, and the scenery is the whole point. In summer the hiking network spans everything from easy valley walks to challenging high-alpine routes. In winter the ski area connects with Wengen and Mürren to form one of Europe's largest ski regions.
The Jungfraujoch railway — departing from Kleine Scheidegg, reached by train from Grindelwald — climbs to 3,454 metres through tunnels bored inside the Eiger. The round trip is expensive but the views from the saddle between the Mönch and Jungfrau, across the Aletsch Glacier, are extraordinary on a clear day.
