Grindelwald is reached by train from Interlaken Ost in about 35 minutes. Interlaken has direct connections to Bern (50 minutes), Basel (2 hours), and Zurich (2 hours). There is no need for a car — trains run frequently and the village centre is compact.
From Zurich Airport, the journey to Grindelwald by train takes about two and a half hours with a change in Bern or Interlaken.
Cars can be driven to Grindelwald, but the village has a large car park at the entrance — driving into the pedestrian centre is restricted. The car-free atmosphere is part of the appeal; the train is both more practical and more scenic.
