Collection de l'Art Brut

Outsider art museum in the Château de Beaulieu

One of the most distinctive museums in Europe, housed in the Château de Beaulieu. The collection features work by self-taught and outsider artists — people who created compulsively, often in isolation, with no training and no interest in the art world. The results are startling, obsessive, and frequently beautiful. Unlike anything you will see in a conventional gallery.

A story
The collection was assembled by the French artist Jean Dubuffet, who coined the term 'Art Brut' in 1945 for works created outside the mainstream art world — by psychiatric patients, prisoners, and self-taught visionaries. He donated his entire collection to Lausanne in 1971.
