Daubensee

Daubensee is a high-alpine lake at 2,207 metres, sitting in a rocky bowl above the Gemmi Pass. Reached by cable car from Leukerbad followed by an easy 45-minute walk along the plateau, it makes an accessible introduction to the high mountain landscape above the village. The water is an intense turquoise-blue in summer against the grey limestone and sparse alpine vegetation.

The lake is popular with swimmers in July and August — the water is cold but not prohibitively so for those who want the experience. A small wooden structure provides shelter at the lake's edge. The walk back to the Gemmi station can be varied by looping around the far side of the lake, adding perhaps another 30 minutes to the return.
