Swiss Museum of Transport

The Swiss Museum of Transport is one of the most comprehensive transport museums in Europe. Spread over a large lakeside site to the east of the city centre, its collection covers every mode of transport Switzerland has ever used: full-size steam locomotives, Alpine post coaches, cable cars, military aircraft, racing cars, and the original ETR 610 tilting train that once ran the Gotthard route.

The road transport and rail halls are enormous. The space and communications sections are surprisingly strong, with satellites and a planetarium attached to the museum. There is also a film and media museum section covering Swiss broadcast history. Allow half a day — this is not a place to rush. Children find it exciting and adults who arrive expecting a specialist collection tend to find it far more varied than expected.

A story
Among the exhibits is the original mesoscaphe submarine designed by Auguste Piccard and used at Expo 64 in Lausanne. Piccard's bathyscaphe designs helped establish deep-sea exploration, but the mesoscaphe — built for tourism rather than science — took paying passengers on underwater tours of Lake Geneva during the 1964 World's Fair. It is displayed outdoors on the lake side of the museum.
