Mountain Studios (Queen: The Studio Experience)

Mountain Studios is the recording facility inside the Montreux Casino where Queen recorded seven albums between 1978 and 1991. The studio has been preserved as a museum called "Queen: The Studio Experience," with the original equipment intact, personal items belonging to the band members, and audio-visual material documenting their years in Montreux.

The exhibition is modest in size but carefully curated, and it does justice to the depth of the band's connection to the town. The mixing desk, the instrument collection, and the photographs of recording sessions form the core of the display. For Queen fans it's a pilgrimage; for everyone else it's a good hour's exploration of how a rock band's relationship with a small Swiss town produced some of the most successful music of the 1970s and 80s. Open most days; entry around 12 CHF.

A story
Mountain Studios was originally built inside the Montreux Casino as a recording facility after the original casino burned down in 1971 — the fire that inspired Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water," written the same week from across the lake. Queen purchased the studio in 1978 and used it as their primary recording base for the next decade. Among the albums recorded here: Jazz, The Game, Flash Gordon, Hot Space, The Works, A Kind of Magic, and Innuendo — Freddie Mercury's last album, completed as he was dying.
