Portes du Soleil Ski Domain

The Portes du Soleil is one of the largest linked ski domains in the Alps, connecting twelve resorts across the French-Swiss border with over 600 kilometres of marked runs. Morgins is the southernmost Swiss resort in the circuit, and from here the full domain is accessible via the Pas de Morgins ski crossing into France.

The skiing suits intermediates best. The long, tree-lined runs above Morgins offer good shelter in bad weather, and the crossing into France opens up terrain toward Avoriaz — the most dramatic resort in the chain, built on a cliff-top in the French Chablais. Expert skiers head for the Swiss Wall at Champéry, the steepest run in the domain, which starts almost vertically. Lift passes cover all twelve resorts with no additional charge for crossing the border.

A story
The Portes du Soleil circuit was stitched together in the 1960s by the mayor of Morzine, Marcel Mingot, who negotiated lift connections with neighbouring resorts across the French-Swiss border. What started as a local ambition became one of the world's largest ski areas — and Morgins, the quiet Swiss gateway, sees a fraction of the crowds that descend on Avoriaz and Morzine on the French side.
