The Abbey Library — Stiftsbibliothek — is one of the oldest libraries in the world still in continuous operation. Founded in the 8th century, it holds approximately 170,000 volumes, of which around 2,100 are manuscripts predating 1500 AD. Among them are illuminated gospels, astronomical treatises, chronicles, and the Plan of Saint Gall, a 9th-century architectural drawing that is the oldest such document to survive anywhere.
The Baroque reading room, completed in 1767, is considered one of the finest Baroque interiors in Switzerland. Gilded shelves rise two storeys under an ornate painted ceiling; the floor is inlaid parquet and visitors are given felt slippers to protect it. The room itself is displayed as a museum space; the books on the shelves are genuine and still consulted by researchers. A changing exhibition of treasures from the collection is displayed in cases around the room.
