The House of the Golden Ox has the finest oriel window in Schaffhausen — which is saying something in a city with over 170 Erker on its facades. The bay window is carved with reliefs depicting the five human senses: an elaborate late Gothic programme that required a sculptor of real ambition to execute. Smell, taste, sight, hearing, and touch are each given their own figure and symbols, worked into the stonework with the kind of specificity that rewards close looking.
Schaffhausen has more oriel windows than any other Swiss city, and most of the best ones are within a ten-minute walk of each other in the old town. The Goldener Ochse is the place to start. The building itself is privately owned but the facade is fully visible from the street, and the oriel overhangs the pavement enough that you can stand directly beneath it.
