Munot

The Munot is a circular 16th-century fortress on Emmersberg hill, built on the basis of a design attributed to Albrecht Dürer. It is the symbol of Schaffhausen and earns its status: the round tower, the moat, and the vineyard terraces below it make for a coherent and surprisingly intimate fortification. The interior is open to walk through, and the acoustics inside the rotunda are worth testing.

Walk up for panoramic views over the Rhine and the old town — it takes about ten minutes from the centre. The watchman still rings the fortress bell at 9pm every night, a tradition maintained without interruption since 1648. If you are in town in the evening, position yourself in the old town to hear it.
