Sion has its own railway station on the main Lausanne–Brig line, with direct trains from Lausanne (about 1h15) and Brig (about 45 minutes). From Geneva, the journey takes around 1h40 by train. Connections from Zurich require a change, usually at Lausanne or Visp, and take about 2h30.
By car, Sion sits on the A9 motorway through the Rhône valley. It is about 160 km east of Geneva and 110 km west of Brig. The approach through the valley — with the vineyards on both sides and the hills rising ahead — is one of the more scenic drives in Switzerland.
Sion also has a small regional airport (SIon, IATA: SIR) with seasonal connections, primarily useful for charter flights to ski resorts. For most visitors, the train is more practical.
