Majorie Castle (Cantonal Museum of Art)

Majorie Castle is a medieval episcopal residence on the slope below Valère, now housing the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts (Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts). The building itself is worth the visit — a complex of medieval and early modern structures that served as the bishops' winter palace for centuries.

The collection inside focuses on art connected to Valais and the Alpine world, with works from the 15th century to the present. Swiss and French artists dominate, with particular strength in 19th and early 20th century painting that captures the valley landscape. The setting — a medieval castle with contemporary art — works better than it sounds.
