Museum Altes Zeughaus

The Museum Altes Zeughaus — the Old Armoury — occupies the original arsenal building and holds one of the largest collections of historical armour and weapons in Switzerland. Founded in 1610, the collection was preserved largely intact through the 18th and 19th centuries and now functions as a military history museum, though the sheer quantity of material on display gives it the feel of a proper arsenal rather than a conventional exhibition.

The highlights are the full suits of tournament armour and the ranks of halberds — the Swiss pike-and-axe weapon that gave the Swiss infantry their reputation across 15th-century Europe. The 16th-century firearms collection is also substantial. The building itself is a good example of late Renaissance civic architecture and the entrance portal is worth examining in detail.

A story
The armoury was built in 1610 to house the weapons and armour of the canton, and it was never fully decommissioned — the collection was simply preserved in place rather than dispersed or sold. As a result, it contains complete sets of armour from the 16th and 17th centuries, thousands of swords, halberds, and pikes, and a collection of early firearms that represents the actual operational inventory of a mid-sized Swiss canton over three centuries of conflict.
