The cathedral and the old town can be covered in a morning. The Kunstmuseum and the old armoury take most of another half day. For those who want to walk, the Verena Gorge to the northwest is one of the most atmospheric short hikes in the Jura foothills — a narrow limestone canyon leading to a hermitage that has been occupied since the Middle Ages. Schloss Waldegg on the hill above the city is an undervisited 17th-century country house with its original interiors intact.
