Bahnhofstrasse

Zurich's grand shopping boulevard running from the station to the lake

Bahnhofstrasse runs about 1.4 kilometres from the Hauptbahnhof straight down to the shore of Lake Zurich, following the course of what was once the Froschengraben (Frogs' Moat). It's the main commercial artery of the city — lined with banks, luxury watchmakers, and fashion houses — and consistently ranks among the most expensive retail streets in the world.

The lower end near the lake has the flagship stores of Swiss watch and jewellery brands; the upper end near the station is more mixed, with department stores and everyday shops. Trams run the full length, so you can ride it before committing to a walk. If you're not buying, the street is still worth strolling for its wide pavements and the view of the lake opening up at the far end.
