Eating Out

Swiss food is hearty rather than refined — cheese fondue, raclette, rösti, veal in cream sauce (Zürcher Geschnetzeltes is the local speciality), sausages. For the classic version go to a guild hall restaurant along the Limmatquai or one of the old beer halls like Zeughauskeller, a converted armoury on the Paradeplatz. Around Zähringerplatz and the Niederdorf, smaller traditional restaurants do the same dishes in less touristy settings.

Outside of Swiss classics, Zurich's immigrant communities have given the city strong Italian, Turkish, and increasingly good Vietnamese and Japanese options. The food courts at the main train station and the Europaallee are cheap and fast; Kreis 4 and 5 carry most of the new-wave casual places.
