Polybahn

Tiny red funicular climbing up to ETH Zurich since 1889

The Polybahn — officially the UBS Polybahn since the bank took over sponsorship in the 1990s — is a small bright-red funicular that climbs from Central, in the heart of the old town, up to the ETH Zurich's main building on the hillside in about a minute and a half. It first ran in 1889, electrified in 1897, and is one of the city's signature short journeys.

The carriages are charmingly squat, single-deck, and tilted to match the slope. Tickets are included in any ZVV pass; otherwise it is a few francs each way. Useful as transport (the ETH terrace at the top is a fine viewpoint over the city), but more often used as a small Swiss novelty by visitors who simply enjoy a two-minute ride on something that has been doing the same job since the 1880s.
