Kamianets-Podilskyi is a compact city that rewards slow exploration on foot. The entire old town occupies a rocky peninsula formed by a loop of the Smotrych River — you can walk the perimeter in an hour, looking down into the gorge on both sides. The castle at the western tip is the obvious starting point, but the old town's churches, towers, and remnants of city gates are worth an afternoon in themselves.
The castle, cathedral, and canyon form the essential triangle of the city. Beyond these, the old Armenian quarter on the eastern side of the island gives a sense of the town's medieval mercantile diversity. The best views of the castle are from the road bridge crossing the canyon to the west, and in the late afternoon when the light hits the stone towers.
