Polovtsian Stone Sculptures

This open-air collection holds more than 80 Polovtsian stone figures, one of Ukraine's larger groups of these medieval steppe sculptures. The figures, mostly human forms carved between the 11th and 12th centuries, were once placed on burial mounds by nomadic peoples of the steppe.

The collection is especially interesting because the statues are monumental art from cultures that left few standing traces in modern cities. Look for the differences in faces, clothing, and poses rather than treating them as a single repeated form.
