Getting There

Mykolaiv is connected to the rest of Ukraine primarily by rail and road. The city's own airport (MYK) was a small regional facility but has not operated commercial flights since before the 2022 invasion and is not a viable entry point. The nearest functional international airport is Odesa (about 130 km southwest), though Odesa itself has also seen significant disruption since 2022.

By train, Mykolaiv has direct connections to Kyiv (roughly 9–10 hours overnight), Lviv, Kharkiv, and other major Ukrainian cities via Mykolaiv railway station on the eastern side of the city. Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) runs the national network; booking is possible online at the Ukrzaliznytsia website or through third-party rail booking platforms. Train is generally the most reliable and practical intercity option.

By bus, regular intercity coaches connect Mykolaiv to Odesa, Kherson (route affected by the war), Kyiv, and Dnipro. The main bus terminal is near the railway station. Journey times are longer than by rail but departures are frequent on popular routes.

By car, Mykolaiv sits on the H-11 highway connecting it to Odesa to the southwest and Kherson to the east. Road conditions vary and the situation east of Mykolaiv has been directly affected by the conflict.

Current situation: The security situation since February 2022 has significantly affected transport to and from Mykolaiv. Check current advisories, verify which routes are operating, and consult Ukrzaliznytsia for the latest train timetables before planning any journey.
