The regional art museum, named after the Russian war painter Vasily Vereshchagin, holds a collection of Ukrainian and European art from the 17th century onward. Vereshchagin was a native of Cherepovets, not Mykolaiv, but his brutal and unsentimental paintings of warfare — many documenting the Central Asian campaigns of the Russian Empire — earned the museum a famous association. The permanent collection includes works by Ukrainian artists alongside the namesake's paintings, and the building occupies an attractive neoclassical structure near the city centre.
