Solomon's Temple

Solomon's Temple is a small Victorian folly tower on the summit of Grin Low, the hill above Buxton, at 437 metres. The climb from Poole's Cavern through Grin Low Wood takes about 20 minutes on a clear path and rewards with panoramic views across the town and out to the dark ridges of the Peak District.

The tower itself is Grade II listed and was restored in 1988. You can climb the circular staircase inside to the top level for a better view. On a clear day the view stretches from the Cheshire Plain in the west to the high moorland of the Dark Peak in the east. It is a good walk on a fine afternoon, particularly combined with the cavern below.

A story
The folly was built in 1896 by a local farmer named Solomon Mycock, who paid for the construction himself to provide employment to local men during a hard winter. He built it on top of a Bronze Age burial mound where several skeletons had been discovered during excavations in the 1860s. The mound is estimated to be around 4,000 years old.
