The Pavilion Gardens are a 23-acre Victorian park at the heart of Buxton, laid out in 1871 by Edward Milner — who had trained under Joseph Paxton, designer of the Crystal Palace. The park wraps around the River Wye and provides the green backdrop to the Opera House, Octagon Hall, and Pavilion Arts Centre, which together form Buxton's cultural cluster.
The glasshouse conservatory, restored in the early 2000s, hosts events and exhibitions through the year. The park itself has a lake with rowing boats, a miniature railway, and a bandstand where concerts take place in summer. It is free to enter and functions as the town's main outdoor gathering space, particularly during the July festival season.
