Elizabethan Garden

The recreated garden sits beneath the keep walls of Kenilworth Castle and is one of the most ambitious historical reconstructions in England. The quartered beds, the carved-aviary, the eighteen-foot marble fountain topped with Atlas, the obelisks, and the planting scheme are all drawn from a 1575 eyewitness account by Robert Langham.

It is small but dense with detail, and the contrast with the surrounding ruined sandstone is striking. The garden is included with castle admission; allow half an hour. Best in early summer when the roses and pinks Langham described are in flower.

A story
Robert Dudley built this garden in 1575 for Queen Elizabeth's visit. It was destroyed during the Civil War and lay buried for nearly four centuries until a 2009 English Heritage project recreated it from a contemporary description in a letter sent by one of the visitors.
