Lincoln's centre is compact and walkable, but it is vertical — Steep Hill is genuinely steep, and travellers with reduced mobility will find it hard going. Most visitors plan a single Uphill loop and a separate Downhill loop, rather than constantly bouncing between the two.
Walking. From the railway station in Downhill to the cathedral square is about 15 minutes if you take the climb in one go, with several stop-and-catch-your-breath spots along the way.
Bus. The Walk and Ride service (route 1) loops between the railway station, Castle Square at the top of the hill, and back down — useful if the climb is not feasible. Tickets are cheap; buy from the driver.
Bike. Lincoln has expanded its bike-share scheme around the central campus area; bikes are useful for the riverside Witham trail but a struggle on the cliff.
Taxi. Black cabs and licensed minicabs are plentiful, especially at the railway station and Castle Square ranks.
