Brown's has been on Steep Hill for over thirty years and has become the standard answer to "where do I eat near the cathedral?" The dining room runs across several connected rooms in a 16th-century building, with wooden floors, low ceilings, and a coal fire in winter. The menu is essentially modern British pub food done seriously: the famous individual pies (steak-and-Stilton, chicken-and-leek, game), good Sunday roasts, sticky toffee pudding.
Reservations recommended at weekends, especially on cathedral concert nights. Children and dogs welcome. A handy lunch stop after a morning at the castle or cathedral; or a more leisurely dinner with a serious British wine list.
