St Mary's sits at the top of the Lace Market on the highest ground in the old town. The current church is largely 15th-century Perpendicular Gothic — a substantial cruciform building with a tall central tower — though there has been a church on the site since at least the 11th century and probably much earlier. The interior is light, well-proportioned and contains some fine Pre-Raphaelite stained glass by Burne-Jones and Morris in the south aisle.
The churchyard has been kept as a small park and is one of the more pleasant places to sit in the city centre. The church remains a working parish but is open to visitors most weekday afternoons.
