Worksop Priory

Worksop Priory — formally the Priory Church of Our Lady and Saint Cuthbert — is the finest medieval building in the town and one of the more substantial Norman survivals in the East Midlands. Founded as an Augustinian priory in the twelfth century, the nave of the church is largely original Norman and Early English work, with characteristically solid round pillars and deep-set windows.

The medieval gatehouse at the churchyard entrance is a particular highlight: a substantial two-storey structure dating from around 1314, with an arched passageway and a small room above still used by the church. Most of the monastic buildings were demolished after the Dissolution, but the gatehouse and the nave give a clear sense of what the original complex would have been.

The church is free to enter and is open most days.
