Worksop is a small Nottinghamshire town on the edge of Sherwood Forest, useful primarily as a base for exploring the Dukeries — the cluster of great country estates that once belonged to some of England's wealthiest families. Clumber Park, the nearest and finest, is a National Trust property with a stunning Gothic Revival chapel, a long lake, and miles of cycling and walking trails through ancient woodland.
The town itself is modest, but the Priory Church of Our Lady is worth a look — a Norman and Early English building with a fine gatehouse. Mr Straw's House, a National Trust property, preserves a 1920s semi-detached house almost exactly as its occupants left it, an unexpectedly fascinating time capsule of middle-class Edwardian life.
