When to Go

Bury St Edmunds is a year-round destination; there are no bad times to visit, though the market days (Wednesday and Saturday) are the best days to arrive if you want to see the town at its liveliest. Summer brings the Greene King beer festival and occasional outdoor events in the Abbey Gardens. The Christmas market in December turns Angel Hill into something approaching a period piece. Winter weekdays are quiet, which is its own appeal — the abbey ruins and cathedral to yourself, and the Georgian streets without the weekend crowds.
