The Free Press on Prospect Row, a short walk south of the city centre, is the best pub in Cambridge for those who value atmosphere over fame. A tiny Victorian backstreet local with no music, no gaming machines, and no television, it serves a rotating selection of real ales from East Anglian brewers in conditions that seem unchanged from the 1970s. The bar is barely wide enough for two people to squeeze past each other. The beer is excellent and the regulars are usually worth talking to. Closed lunchtimes Monday to Thursday.
