Newnham College

Historic women's college with long brick ranges and some of Cambridge's loveliest gardens.

Newnham College is one of Cambridge's great women's colleges, founded in the 19th century when women's access to the university was still being fought for. Its long red-brick buildings and generous gardens feel different from the older river colleges: less medieval theatre, more late-Victorian confidence and calm.

Access varies with college rules and events, but even from the surrounding streets the college adds an important strand to the Cambridge story. If you are interested in how the university changed, Newnham belongs on the same mental map as Girton and the older central colleges, not as a footnote but as part of the city's intellectual architecture.
