Electric Palace Cinema

One of Britain's oldest surviving purpose-built cinemas

Opened in 1911, the Electric Palace is one of the oldest purpose-built cinemas in the UK to survive with its original features intact: the ornamental frontage, the silent screen, and the projection room behind its fireproof door. It still screens films today. The building sits on King's Quay Street in the old town, easy to spot from its decorative facade.

A story
When the Electric Palace opened in 1911, the silent films were accompanied by a piano player. The projection room, with its fireproof door to protect the audience from the flammable nitrate film, is still intact and unchanged — one of very few in Britain.
