Market Hill

Market Hill is the historic centre of Sudbury, a broad market square overlooked by the handsome Town Hall and surrounded by a mix of Tudor, Georgian, and Victorian buildings. The square hosts a weekly market on Thursdays and Saturdays — mainly produce, clothing, and local goods — and the bronze statue of Gainsborough stands at its centre, paint palette in hand.

The surrounding buildings are worth examining: the Corn Exchange on the south side, the Victorian Town Hall, and several good examples of the Suffolk vernacular — pink-washed plaster and timber frames. The square is quiet on weekdays and cheerfully busy on market mornings.

A story
The weekly market at Sudbury has been held on this site continuously since 1009, when King Æthelred the Unready granted a charter. That makes it one of the oldest continuously operating markets in England. The bronze statue of Thomas Gainsborough at the centre of the square was unveiled in 1913 and is modelled on a self-portrait — Gainsborough as he saw himself, palette in hand, looking faintly amused.
