Sudbury's attractions cluster around two themes: Thomas Gainsborough and the Stour Valley. The museum dedicated to England's greatest portrait painter is excellent, and the surrounding landscape that shaped him — water meadows, gentle hills, timber-framed villages — remains largely unchanged. The town itself rewards a slow walk through its medieval streets.
