Easedale Tarn

Easedale Tarn is a mountain lake (tarn) at 279 metres on the fells above Grasmere, reached by a popular walk that follows Sour Milk Gill — a beck that tumbles down the hillside in a series of cascades. The walk from the village takes about 45 minutes and is one of the most straightforward fell walks in the Lake District, suitable for anyone reasonably fit who doesn't mind a stiff uphill stretch.

The tarn itself sits in a natural bowl beneath Tarn Crag, with views back down the valley to Grasmere and out toward the higher fells. It is a good picnic spot and the setting has a satisfying solitude even when the lower path is busy. Dorothy Wordsworth described Easedale Tarn in her journal, and the walk up Sour Milk Gill is one she and William made regularly.

From the tarn, confident walkers can continue to Blea Rigg and Sergeant Man, extending the walk to half a day with excellent panoramic views.
