Grasmere has a handful of good places to eat, most of them casual. The village operates at a pace that discourages hurrying, and the cafes and pubs reflect this.
The Jumble Room is the most ambitious restaurant in the village — a colourful, eccentric room with an equally eclectic menu that ranges from local lamb to Thai-influenced dishes. The cooking is genuinely good and it gets busy in season; booking ahead is wise. Dove Cottage Tea Rooms is the obvious choice for a traditional Lake District cream tea after visiting the cottage. Greens Cafe keeps things simple: soups, sandwiches, and home baking that suits walkers coming off the fells. For a sit-down pub lunch, the Travellers Rest on the Keswick road has decent food and an open fire in winter.
Sarah Nelson's Grasmere Gingerbread beside the churchyard deserves its own mention — buy several pieces as you leave the village.
