Grasmere punches well above its size for a village with fewer than 1,000 residents. The literary connections are the headline draw, but the surrounding fells and lake offer proper walking country. Most of what the village offers can be covered on foot in a day; walkers who stay overnight will find the surrounding hills more than reward the extra time.
