Helm Crag is the fell that dominates the view north from Grasmere village, its summit rocks distinctive against the skyline. At 405 metres it is not high by Lake District standards, but the path from the village gains height quickly and the views from the top — over Grasmere, Rydal Water, and Easedale Tarn — are disproportionate to the effort involved.
The ascent from the village takes about an hour at a steady pace. The path starts behind the church and climbs through bracken and heather before reaching the rocky summit ridge. The rocks at the top require a little scrambling to stand on the very highest point, which some find exhilarating and others are happy to skip. The descent can be varied via the Easedale Tarn path for a circular route of about three hours.
Helm Crag appears in Wainwright's A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells as one of his favourite short walks. For visitors who want a proper fell walk but cannot commit to a full day, it is the obvious choice from Grasmere.
