Hawkshead is well placed for the southern Lakes. Coniston is twenty minutes' drive west and has Ruskin's house Brantwood and the steam yacht Gondola. Grasmere and Wordsworth's Dove Cottage are reachable in half an hour by car. The Windermere shore towns — Bowness and Ambleside — are only ten minutes by ferry.
