Most of the village's restaurants and pubs are in the old whitewashed inns clustered around the square. The Sun Inn does proper Lakeland pub food — Cumberland sausage, mushy peas, a good pie of the day — in low-ceilinged rooms with open fires. The Queen's Head opposite is similar in style.
For a slightly more ambitious meal, The Drunken Duck Inn on Barngates, a couple of miles outside the village, is a destination gastropub with its own microbrewery and a reputation that runs well beyond the Lakes. The roast loin of pork and the seasonal puddings are particular favourites. Book well ahead.
For coffee and home baking in the day, the Honey Pot on Main Street is the village standby.
