Hawkshead Grammar School

Tudor school where Wordsworth carved his desk

Founded in 1585 by the Archbishop of York, the grammar school educated William Wordsworth from age nine to seventeen. The original schoolroom survives intact, with rows of carved wooden desks and a small museum about Wordsworth's schooldays and the history of education in the Lakes.

Admission is modest and the visit is quick — perhaps 30 minutes — but it is genuinely affecting for anyone who knows the poetry.

A story
Wordsworth carved his name into one of the wooden desks here, and you can still see it. He boarded in the village with Anne Tyson, a local dame, and later described his years at Hawkshead as among the happiest of his life. The school's countryside and the surrounding fells shaped much of the imagery in The Prelude.
