The Guildhall Art Gallery houses the City of London's art collection, with paintings of London, civic life, and changing exhibitions in a quiet building beside the medieval Guildhall. It is a useful stop in the Square Mile because it pairs art with something much older underfoot.
During construction of the modern gallery, workers found the remains of London's Roman amphitheatre. The preserved stone walls and arena outline sit in the basement, giving the visit a sharp turn from Victorian civic art to Londinium.
