The Museum of Hartlepool tells the town's story from its Saxon abbey through the Victorian shipbuilding boom and into post-industrial decline. The displays don't shy away from the harder parts — the loss of the yards, the heroin years — but they balance it with genuine local pride in the maritime past.
The standout exhibit is a reconstructed Saxon log boat dredged out of the local harbour. Admission is free; an hour is plenty.
