The foundations of a small Roman temple of Antenociticus, a local Celtic god, surviving improbably in the back of a 1930s housing estate west of the city centre. The original altars and a fragmentary head of the god — discovered here in 1862 — are in the Great North Museum; what remains on site is a stone footprint and an interpretation panel.
A genuinely off-the-tourist-track curiosity, free to visit. Buses run from the centre to the West Road; the temple is in Broomridge Avenue. Combine with a Hadrian's Wall trip — this was Condercum Fort, a wall installation in its own right.
