The Black Gate

13th-century barbican gate to Newcastle Castle, severed from the keep by railway

The 13th-century outer barbican to Newcastle Castle, added by Henry III in 1247. The structure now stands a hundred yards from the keep — the East Coast Main Line railway viaduct runs directly between the two — but together they form the Newcastle Castle ticketed visit. The Black Gate's upper floors hold the historical exhibition.

The gate was used as a private house and tavern for much of its later history; the upper storeys were added in the 17th century and the renovations in the early 2000s peeled back the layers to reveal both periods. Entry is included with the Castle Keep ticket.
