Cafe Royal

Grade II Edwardian cafe-restaurant off Grey Street since 1908

A handsome 1908 cafe and restaurant on Nelson Street, two blocks west of Grey Street, still trading more or less as designed — gilt, mirrors, plaster cornices and dark wood. The kitchen does sandwiches, all-day breakfasts, and proper afternoon teas. A reliable, characterful refuge for an hour out of the rain.

The basement bar in the same building runs a separate menu later in the evening. Worth the small detour from the standard Grainger Town walk.
