Newcastle Civic Centre

Brutalist municipal complex with a startling pair of bronze seahorses

The 1968 Civic Centre is one of the most ambitious Brutalist municipal complexes in Britain — a 12-storey tower wrapped around a central courtyard, with cast bronze seahorses by John Robert Murray McCheyne projecting from the corners. The building was Grade II*-listed in 1995, partly to protect it from demolition demands.

Tours occasionally run on heritage open days. The council chamber and rooftop are worth seeing if you can catch one. Otherwise the exterior — particularly the riverside facade — is the easiest part to appreciate from the street.
