Gateshead Millennium Bridge

The world's first tilting bridge, opened in 2001

The 21st-century symbol of Newcastle-Gateshead — a 105-metre pedestrian and cycle bridge that tilts open like an eyelid when boats need to pass. The mechanism opens and closes a few times a day to a published schedule (and on demand for ships); the operation takes about four minutes and is genuinely worth waiting for.

The bridge is the natural pedestrian route between Newcastle's Quayside and Gateshead's Baltic and Sage. Best seen lit at night, when the structure is bathed in colour and the river reflects the full row of older bridges to the west.

A story
The bridge does not lift like Tower Bridge or swing like a railway bridge — it rotates as a single steel arch, the deck pivoting upwards in unison so that a 30-metre yacht can pass beneath in four minutes. Locally it is called the Blinking Eye for the way it appears to slowly open and close from a distance.
